The Functional Re-adaptive Exercise Device will soon be tested as a rehabilitation intervention following a 60-day period of head down tilt bedrest, a ground-based simulation of the physiological effects of microgravity used by the space agencies.

The Functional Re-adaptive Exercise Device (FRED) has shown potential as a non-specific LBP intervention by automatically recruiting LM and TrA. Loss or lordosis and altered lumbopelvic positioning has also been linked to LBP and is often trained within LM and TrA interventions.

The Functional Re-adaptive Exercise Device (FRED) has been studied by Caplan and Debuse over the last five years to determine its ability to promote the recruitment of key muscles that stabilise the lumbar spine. Without optimal structure and function of these muscles, the spine loses stability, predisposing it to injury.
